In order to create pleasing and functional kitchen styles and designs, you may want to get an idea of standard dimensions of kitchen cabinets and appliances before you start. Standard sizing makes it easier to get an understanding of the space you have to work with when designing a kitchen or buying new appliances for an existing one.
The standard depth for kitchen cabinets is 60 cm. The depth should be measured to include the thickness of the door and front of the drawer, but not the handles of the door. The width of the kitchen cabinets is usually a multiple of 10 or 15 cm, and the height of the base units will reach 91 cm including the adjustable leg, plus the addition of the worktop which can be either 2cm, 3cm, 4cm thick. You will find that the majority of dishwashers and freestanding ovens are designed to work with these sizes. Good quality kitchen cabinets will generally be 18mm thick, with an 8mm solid back for extra rigidity.
Wall cabinets have different standard sizing. They tend to be a standard 30 cm deep with a variable height. Most of them are likely to be either 76 cm or 90 cm tall. Some manufacturers make deeper units at 35cm deep.
Pantry and Larder Cabinets
Pantry and Larder Cabinets are great for storage and start at 30cm wide up to 100cm wide with a choice of heights from 150cm, 190cm, 217cm, and 229cm (including the leg).
Don’t forget about leaving enough space for cabinets to swing open and to move around between units. Most cabinet doors open up to a maximum of 60 cm – including dishwasher doors. Oven doors can be a bit less – normally around 50 cm. As a general rule of thumb, there should be a gap of at least 40 cm between any door and the unit which is closest to it. This means you need to allow for 120 cm between the row of units and the wall housing the door.
Kitchen Appliance Cabinets
Integrated Laundry and Dishwashers are made specifically to go behind a kitchen door and under the worktop and these are 60cm wide.
Integrated behind the door refrigeration comes in many combinations, either to go under the worktop or to be built into a tall housing unit which are 60cm wide and can be 190cm, 217cm or 229cm tall.
Built-in ovens are always 60cm wide and can be 60cm, 76cm or 90cm high and these then fit into different styles of housings again with different heights available.
Of course, all kitchen cabinets and appliances dimensions can vary but these are the standard measurements, so you may need to be more specific if you’re working with limited space. So once you have your measurements contact a good kitchen retailer who will have the expertise and design skills to advise you about what will fit in your kitchen and what won’t.
