The Ramsbottom Cake Festival is nearly here – Are you ready to bake?
All over Ramsbottom, hands are busy stirring and taste buds are getting ready for the second annual Cake Festival, which will take place on 28th June. Celebrating everything that’s great about cake, the festival offers food and drink (with cake obviously included), a bouncy castle, entertainment and of course, one of the most hotly anticipated events of the festival – the bake off!
Following on from last year’s success
The bake off last year received unprecedented attention, with all manner of delicious cakes to be tried, such as Battenberg, lemon drizzle cake, cupcakes and carrot cake, to name but a few. There were a number of entries to last years bake off, which was judged by local councillor Luise Fitzwalter, and the eventual winners had to fend off some tough competition to walk off with the title. In the wake of last year’s success, there has already been considerable interest in the competition for this year, and it’s likely to be even more hotly contested. The contest runs two categories – one for those under 17, and one for the adults (18+), so why not get your bake on, and head into the kitchen to whip up something delicious to try and impress the judges!
What to bake for the Bake Off
Here at Ramsbottom Kitchens, we’re looking forward very much to trying the delicacies on display, and to help all of you budding would-be-bakers, we’re offering a slice of inspiration to help you decide on what to bake:
Always a firm family favourite, the Battenberg is tricky to perfect, but done well it combines style and tastiness, with a combination of jam, marzipan and soft sponge that will tickle even the fussiest of taste buds. We’ve dug out a fantastic recipe if you want to give this one a go!
Zingy yet sweet, this citrus treat goes down a storm at tea parties and restaurants alike. We’ve taken a little inspiration from the Great British Bake Off here, to bring you the Queen of Baking’s recipe, from the kitchen of Mary Berry herself.
If you fancy thrilling the judges (or even your family and friends) with something a little bit different, then why not try Jamie Oliver’s fantastic Hummingbird cake. Wonderfully light sponge, laden with pineapple, pecan brittle and banana, with a creamy icing – this is one cake that’s sure to impress.
Want to bake something that appeals to kids and adults alike? Then why not try a cake featuring one of our very favourite ingredients – Nutella. This fabulous creation has been put together by Nigella Lawson, and is as delicious and decadent as you’d expect. The best thing is (apart from the Nutella of course!)– It’s so easy to make!
Whether you decide to enter one of the cakes above, a creation of your own, or you’d rather join in with some taste testing at Ramsbottom Cake Festival, we’re sure you’ll have a good time!
